President Museveni Smashes Anti-Gay Bill in Uganda

17 Jan

yoweri_museveniAfter passing through the House, the terrible Ugandan anti-gay bill was swiftly shut down by President Yoweri Museveni, his reasons detailed in a 9-page letter to the Speaker of the House. While there are many that say that this is another African president bowing to Western pressure, I would rather see it as a  president who understands that there are these conditions called priorities which other presidents need to look at.

However his comments about homosexuality are worrisome as he referred to gay people as “abnormal” or “products of random breeding” in Western societies. So progressive may not be the right word really to describe him but I’m glad that at least the bill has been dropped and LGBT folk in Uganda can heave a huge sigh of relief for now. Read the rest of this story here on the BBC.

Oh D.C., similar to Nigeria, I still find it hard to understand these leaders, and the dialog in the BBC report from Museveni, “You cannot call an abnormality an alternative orientation” just blows me away, but like you said, they at least have that moment of relief.

Yes! He made a lot of ignorant statements about homosexuality. And he’s the president of a country. Sometimes it’s hard to understand how people in power can know so little about very important things.

Western pressures? Well, anti-gay sentiment was pushed by the West onto Africa. It was American evangelicals who fanned the flames of this fire that now burns…

Power corrupts and I guess it is fair to say that he enjoys his “corruption” so much that he fears a significant reduction in aid should the homophobic bill become law. And yes, I agree 100% with the comment above that American hypocrites exported this current wave of hatred into not only Africa but the rest of the world, also. Thanks for posting this, buddy! Much love and naked hugs! 🙂
