Man Gets Gang Raped in South Africa

16 Feb

keep-silentOn the heels of the terrible, terrible rape, mutilation and murder of 17 year-old Anene Booysen comes another tale of gang rape in South Africa, this time involving a 33 year-old man who was allegedly raped in Kroondal in the North West Province by six men who drugged him and put a plastic bag around his head before violating him. This attack happened while the victim was walking to work. Currently no names have been released and no arrests have been made.

I was brought up to believe that men are supposed to be strong and to never admit to any form of weakness. To be raped is to admit that you are unable to protect yourself and hence may not be able to protect others. It is no wonder then that men are raped more often than is reported, especially during war and conflict, which is not surprising since rape is more about violence and control than sexual satisfaction. All this means that such a crime will keep occurring (whether or not there is political instability) since the perpetrators are almost certain their targets will not go to the authorities

Less than 10% of men who get raped ever report it – the shame, the lack of support and the ridicule they will probably endure may be too much to handle.I feel for this gentleman (whoever he is) and I respect his decision to come forward. Whether or not justice will be served in this case is another matter altogether.

You are correct when you wrote that male rape is seriously under-reported. It is a grave problem not only in Africa, but all over the world. I hope that justice is served on these six perpetrators.

It is a huge problem but by under-reported, I mean that the victims do not often come forward.

Rape is such an awful experience that I understand why victims don’t come forward.
